Ebike Basic Maintenance

Changing an Ebike Tire tube

Here are the steps to change the tire tube on an ebike. Before you start you need to identify the type of motor you ebike has. To change the tire on a rear hub motor bike you first have to disconnect the electric cable that connects the motor to the motor controller for the bicycle.

  1. Remove the wheel: To access the tire, you need to remove the wheel from the bike. Depending on the bike, you may need to release the brake calipers or the quick release lever to remove the wheel.
  2. Remove the tire: Once the wheel is off, use a tire lever to pry the tire off the rim. Be careful not to damage the rim or spokes.
  3. Remove the inner tube: Once the tire is off, remove the inner tube by pulling it out from one side of the tire.
  4. Check for damage: Inspect the inside of the tire for any cuts, punctures, or other damage. If the tire is damaged, you may need to replace it.
  5. Replace the inner tube: Insert the new inner tube into the tire, taking care to ensure that it is properly positioned and not twisted.
  6. Replace the tire: Put the tire back on the rim, being careful not to pinch the inner tube. Make sure the tire is properly seated and there are no wrinkles or bulges in the sidewall.
  7. Inflate the tire: Use a pump to inflate the tire to the recommended pressure. Be sure to check the sidewalls of the tire and make sure there are no leaks.
  8. Reinstall the wheel: Reinstall the wheel on the bike and tighten the quick release lever or brake calipers.

Note: Some electric bikes may have different tire and tube requirements. Before changing the tire tube, consult the owner’s manual for your specific bike for guidance.

Changing an E-bike motor controller

Changing the motor controller on an e-bike can seem daunting, but with the right steps, it’s manageable. Here’s a general guide to help you through the process:

Tools and Materials You’ll Need:

  • New motor controller compatible with your e-bike
  • Screwdriver set (Phillips and flathead)
  • Zip ties
  • Gloves (optional for protection)

Steps to Change the Motor Controller:

  1. Power Off and Remove the Battery:
    • Turn off your e-bike completely.
    • Remove the battery to avoid any electrical hazards.
  2. Locate the Motor Controller:
    • The controller is usually inside the frame’s downtube or in a separate housing.
    • Remove the cover or panel protecting the controller using a screwdriver.
  3. Disconnect the Wires:
    • Take pictures or label the wires before disconnecting them to ensure you reconnect everything correctly.
    • Carefully unplug each connector or cut and strip any wires that are soldered or permanently attached.
  4. Remove the Old Controller:
    • Once the wires are disconnected, remove the old motor controller from its housing.
  5. Install the New Controller:
    • Connect the new controller to the same wires. Ensure each connector is fully inserted and secure.
    • Feed the motor wire back through the frame if necessary.
  6. Reconnect the Wires:
    • Reconnect all the wires to the new controller, following the labels or pictures you took earlier.
  7. Test the Connections:
    • Before securing everything, test the new controller to ensure all connections are correct and the system works properly.
  8. Secure the Controller:
    • Once everything is working, secure the new controller in its housing and replace the cover or panel.
    • Use zip ties to organize and secure the wires.
  9. Reconnect the Battery and Power On:
    • Reconnect the battery and turn on the e-bike to ensure everything is functioning correctly.
